Why SEO content writing is the perfect niche for new or beginning freelance writers

There are many different kinds of freelance writing. There are so many different kinds of writing that it can be hard to know where to start and what to specialise in, or even if you should specialise in any genre. FYI, I think you should specialise, but that’s something we can talk about another time.

Since 1993, I’ve worked as a free-lance writer. I’ve written everything from case studies to ebooks to simple web (SEO) articles for clients, and I can say without a doubt that if you are new to this career, specialising in SEO content writing is one of the easiest ways to start getting jobs.

Here are some examples of the kinds of writing jobs that freelance writers do and/or specialise in.

What Kinds of Freelance Writing Are There?

Ebook Writing

Case Studies

The White Papers

Magazine Writing

Making an infographic

Social Media Writing

Articles and Web Content for SEO

Copy for direct mail

Writing for techies

Why writing SEO content is a good niche for new freelance writers

Here are three reasons why I think that.

Content marketing has made the need for copy more important than ever.

Content marketing, in case you didn’t know, is any type of marketing that involves making and sharing media and published content to get customers. This includes web articles, white papers, case studies, and videos, among other things.

You see, online marketing has moved away from direct selling through things like ads. People who are tech-savvy today want to know everything about a product before they buy it. This is why so many of them look things up on the Internet before they buy something. Proof?

The second annual Major Purchase Shopper Study from GE Capital Retail Bank found that more and more people do a lot of research and compare prices and financing options before making big purchases.

According to the study, 81 percent of consumers go online before going to the store. This is up 20 percent from the year before, and they spend an average of 79 days gathering information before making a big purchase. This means that there is a higher demand than ever for web copy, sales copy, white papers, infographics, blog posts, newsletters, etc.

Can start without experience: Unlike some niches, like case study writing, where you need a specific set of skills and experience, it’s pretty easy to get hired to write SEO content without experience, as long as you can show that you have great research skills and good copywriting skills.

How can you show that? Killer (SEO) examples of how to write.

3. Websites that pay you to write: BlogMutt, Helium, Yahoo! Contributor Network, and other sites will pay you to write SEO content.

Many people criticise these sites for their “low pay,” which can be very subjective depending on your situation. On the other hand, others are glad they exist because they can get experience right away and start making money right away.

Conclusion

I’ve been a freelance writer since 1993, as I’ve already said. I found SEO writing by accident in 2007, when it was still a fairly new niche. Now, because the need is so great, it’s almost the only kind of writing I do for clients. So, if you’re just getting started, it’s a great way to get freelance writing jobs fast.
